A Delhi to San Francisco Air India flight was forced to return to its departure point after developing a technical issue while flying over international airspace. The incident involved Air India flight AI173, which had already been in the air for nearly eight hours when the problem was detected, leading to an emergency diversion back to Delhi.
The Boeing 777-300 ER aircraft took off from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport carrying around 230 passengers. The flight was operating on its scheduled long-haul route to San Francisco when the crew noticed a technical malfunction during the journey. According to initial information, the issue was identified while the aircraft was flying over Chinese airspace.
Following standard safety protocols, the flight crew decided not to continue the journey and instead turned the aircraft back toward India. After coordination with air traffic control, the aircraft safely returned to Delhi, where it made an emergency landing at IGI Airport.
Air India confirmed the incident and stated that the decision to return was taken purely on safety grounds. The airline emphasized that passenger safety remains the top priority and all necessary procedures were followed as per aviation guidelines. A technical inspection of the aircraft is expected to determine the exact cause of the fault.
The airline also informed that arrangements were made to assist passengers after landing. This included providing refreshments, hotel accommodation where required, and assistance with re-scheduling onward travel plans. Air India said it is working to ensure that all passengers reach their destination at the earliest possible time through alternative arrangements.
This incident adds to a series of technical disruptions reported by Air India flights in recent times. In previous cases as well, long-haul flights have been diverted or returned mid-journey due to technical concerns, raising attention on operational reliability and maintenance checks within the airline.
In one such earlier incident, a Delhi to Vancouver flight had also returned after remaining airborne for several hours due to technical issues. These repeated cases have highlighted the challenges faced in long-distance international operations.
Authorities are expected to carry out a detailed investigation into the AI173 incident. The findings will help determine whether the fault was minor or required deeper technical intervention.
For now, all passengers from the affected flight are safe, and no injuries were reported. The airline has assured full cooperation with regulatory authorities during the investigation process.
